Winner of the poster competitionThe winner of the poster competition to help police raise awareness about the dangers of gun and knife crime says she wanted to ‘do her bit’ to help tackle the problem.

Reports of gun crime in the news inspired Sheffield schoolgirl, Huilin Zhang, to create a poster that reminds youngsters they still have a chance to walk away from it all.

The 11-year old was encouraged by her teacher at King Edward VII to enter the competition; part of a regional police campaign to reduce weapons-related violence.

Over 100 people sent in their work, including two blind students who printed a poem in Braille, for a chance to win a professionally designed, framed-version of their poster.

A panel of judges comprising police, communications officers and an experienced designer short-listed 14 entries for commendation before picking the winner.

Said Tom Green, Director of Operations at UYR Design: “We chose Huilin’s poster because it was bold, eye-catching and got the right message out in a concise way.”

“It was well laid out and very visual. Most importantly it got across everything we were trying to say in a professional and effective manner,” he added.

Everyone who entered the competition was sent a certificate of gratitude signed by South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable , Meredydd Hughes. You can see a selection of the entries here.
