Why get involved

Guns and Knives Take Lives has a core role of providing young people with information regarding the consequences of carrying weapons. This enables them to make informed choices about issues that could affect their futures.

There are many reasons to get involved with Guns and Knives Take Lives. Here are a few:

  • Success – since the initiative began in 2005 youth related firearms incidents in South Yorkshire have reduced from 46 per cent of all firearms incidents attended by South Yorkshire Police to just 12 per cent
  • Education - Guns and Knives Take Lives has clear links to the PSHE education curriculum and the Government’s ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda
  • Clear and important message delivered in an engaging way - ““Guns and Knives Take Lives is bursting with information. Any outside agency that keeps Y9s on their seats, interested and quiet for nearly two hours must be doing something good. Not only that, you ran into break and there were no complaints from the students! Thanks lads; the students are still talking about it and wondering when you are coming in again.” Ms Jan Featherstone Head Teacher, Stocksbridge High School.
  • Safeguarding young people – By allowing Guns and Knives Take Lives your school you are reducing the risk of one of your pupils coming face to face with an armed police officer through one moment of stupidity
